Both sides are technically still at war, hence the DMZ is the most heavily fortified border in the world with over a million land mines and military forces ready to engage. Follow the footprints to barefeet; most North Korean defectors lose their shoes while crossing the Tumen River into China. It is estimated that in the past decade up to 300,000 refugees have made this dangerous journey and are hiding in China living in constant fear of being repatriated and punished for escaping North Korea.
